The PATRIP project: Nubian Vault construction helps to stabilise cross-frontier populations

Since September 2019, AVN has been running the Burkina Faso / Mali project "Émancipation of cross-frontier communities at risk of destabilisation", financed by the PATRIP Foundation and coordinated by the NGO Welt Hunger Hilfe (WHH). The project aims to help stabilise the cross-frontier region between Mali and Burkina Faso by contributing to the well-being of the local population through creation of youth employment opportunities and the rapid construction of community infrastructure. Specifically, the project involves, over two years, the construction 60 NV buildings and the training of 120 young Maliens and Burkinabes as NV masons in 10 frontier communes.

At the half-way point, a workshop presided over by Sahabani Zeba, High Commissioner of Banwa Province brought together the project partners, local politicians and beneficiaries from the 10 communes, was held on October 27th last in Dédougou.

AVN was able to present encouraging results from this first season, despite some construction delays caused by the rainy season and various security and health issues:

27 community buildings completed, including health centres, school rooms, storage barns, community buildings for women and youngsters, guest rooms etc.;
employment of over 100 local youth undergoing NV training;
the certification of 10 NV head masons who have created their own construction businesses;
the running of around 50 training modules, on-site and in workshops.

Participants in the meeting welcomed these results enthusiastically and praised the many impacts of the project – social cohesion, economic development, improved access to basic services etc. - reinforcing the capacity of of these frontier populations faced with a disturbing security situation. A strong appeal for continuation of the project beyond 2021 was made by all present.

Depuis septembre 2019, AVN est opérateur du projet transfrontalier "Émancipation des communautés transfrontalières en proie à la déstabilisation" mis en œuvre à la frontière Burkina Faso-Mali, financé par la Fondation PATRIP et coordonné par la Welt Hunger Hilfe (WHH). L'objectif du projet est de contribuer à « stabiliser la région frontalière entre le Mali et le Burkina Faso en améliorant le bien-être de la population locale par le renforcement de l'employabilité des jeunes et le déploiement rapide des infrastructures communautaires ». Concrètement, le projet prévoit sur une période de 2 ans, la construction de 60 bâtiments VN et l'initiation de 120 jeunes burkinabè et maliens au métier de maçons VN dans 10 communes frontalières.

A l'heure du bilan de mi-parcours, un atelier présidé Sahabani Zeba, haut-commissaire de la province des Banwa réunissant à la fois les partenaires du projet, les élus locaux et les populations bénéficiaires des 10 communes a été organisé le 27 octobre dernier à Dédougou.
AVN a pu y présenter le bilan encourageant de cette première saison, malgré quelques retards dus au démarrage tardif des chantiers qui se sont poursuit durant la saison des pluies et les aléas de la crise sécuritaire et sanitaire :

27 bâtiments communautaires réalisés, dont des bâtiments de santé, des salles de classe, des bâtiments de stockage, des centres pour les groupes de femmes et de jeunes, des maisons d'hôte, etc. ;
l'emploi de plus de 100 jeunes locaux impliqués dans le processus de formation VN ;
la formalisation de 10 chefs-maçons qui ont créés leurs entreprises formelles ;
la dispense de près de 50 modules de formation sur chantier et en académie.

L'assemblée présente a accueilli ces résultats avec enthousiasme et salué les nombreux impacts découlant du projet - cohésion sociale, développement économique, accès amélioré aux services de base, etc. - et renforçant les capacités des populations frontalières au regard de la situation sécuritaire préoccupante. Une poursuite du projet au-delà de 2021 a largement été sollicitée.

AVN at the Sudan International Education Conference

From January 25 to 27, 2020, Mathieu Hardy represented AVN at the SIEC 2020 (Sudan International Education Conference) in Sudan. Co-organized by the World Bank, the European Union, UNICEF and the Sudanese Ministry of Education, the objective of this conference was to bring the main stakeholders in the sector to identify priorities for the transformation of the Sudanese education system and to propose a collaborative process for the development of new policies and actions contributing to such changes.

AVN's experience in the Western Sahel over the past twenty years has been presented as a case study. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of the evolution of constructive practices towards more sustainability and accessibility. This evolution is now mandatory in response of the current environmental and climatic crises and the massive needs in terms of housing and basic infrastructure that the Sahel is currently facing.

AVN à la Sudan International Education Conference 2020

Du 25 au 27 janvier 2020, Mathieu Hardy a représenté AVN lors du SIEC 2020 (Sudan International Education Conference) au Soudan. Co-organisée par la Banque Mondiale, l'Union Européenne, l'UNICEF et le Ministère de l'Éducation du Soudan, l'objectif de cette conférence sur l'éducation était d'amener les principales parties prenantes du secteur à identifier des priorités pour la transformation du système éducatif soudanais et à proposer un processus de collaboration pour l'élaboration de nouvelles politiques et actions concourant à de tels changements.

L'expérience menée par AVN au Sahel de l'ouest ces vingt dernières années à été présentée comme étude de cas. L'accent a été particulièrement mis sur l'importance de l'évolution des pratiques constructives vers plus de durabilité et d'accessibilité, eu égard d'une part aux crises environnementales et climatiques actuelles, d'autre part aux immenses besoins constructifs auxquels le Sahel fait actuellement face, tant en termes de logements que d'infrastructures de base.
