AVN au colloque Terra Education III

Début juin, Noureddine Aichour, Responsable du Pôle Formation d'AVN a participé au colloque international Terra Education III présentant les dynamiques actuelles en termes d'enseignement supérieur, de formation professionnelle, de recherche, et de diffusion des savoirs en matière d'architecture de terre. Cet événement regroupait de nombreux professionnels engagés dans la promotion de l'architecture de terre, majoritairement issus du monde universitaire.

Sélectionnée par le comité scientifique du colloque, AVN été invitée à présenter pour l'occasion sa méthodologie de formation professionnelle inclusive sous forme d'un poster exposé au public.

En résumé, le programme de formation dispensé par AVN et renforcé depuis deux saison s'inscrit dans une dynamique locale de transmission de savoir-faire intégrée aux économies et aux cultures africaines. Le postulat d'AVN est que, s'inscrivant dans une réalité de marché informelle, la technique Voûte Nubienne doit être transmise sur de véritables chantiers (formation « sur le tas »), les apprentis étant confrontés in situ aux conditions d'organisation, de gestion et d'entrepreneuriat qu'ils rencontreront plus tard en tant que chef de chantier.

Training of the sector

AVN strengthens the knowledge of all formal and informal actors of the building sector: apprentices, masons, artisans, businesses, project managers, building technicians, architects, etc. It offers technical and entrepreneurial training modules. AVN also supports these professionals through expertise, research and technical capitalization services.

Technical Training of Building Professionals

AVN's programme aims to transmit a building knowledge embedded into social habits (co-option-based horizontal transmission) and into a market reality. The basic Nubian Vault technical training therefore takes place “on the ground”, on real building sites.

This training is offered by trainer-masons, selected for the technical, teaching and human qualities. Specific modules, covering different technical aspects of building, are added within some constructions, on additional time devoted to training, taken out of profitability considerations usual to construction. Basic technical training is supplemented by theoretical learning modules, offered in AVN “academies”.

AVN reinforces these technical training activities through:

Creating a Training offer catalog, indexing all types of training offered;
Developing new teaching and monitoring tools: Livret du Parcours de l'Apprenant, guide de formation et d'évaluation à l'usage du maçon formateur et de l'apprenti;
Intensifying promotional offers that enable all target populations to have access to the training and that support collaboration among masons;
Developing “Nubian Vault” curricula within Vocational Training Centers (VTC).

Entrepreneurial Training

AVN develops entrepreneurial support systems aiming at boosting artisans' activity and their economic integration on the building markets, formal as well as informal.

This activity takes place in a complex context: entrepreneurial vision is difficult in West African rural cultures, needs for training are significant (number literacy, planning and organization, management, marketing, accounting and cash flow management, investment and amortization, etc.), and the trainees' profiles and projects vary. Additionnally, the reality and value of collaborative work must also be carefully considered within the entrepreneurial modes offered by AVN.

AVN's goal is to provide a relevant and empirical answer to the actual needs of Nubian Vault artisans and masons, as much as possible.

This activity marks a key milestone in building NV market density.
By strengthening the marketing of masons in their market development (including promoting the NV concept towards new and potential clients), AVN will be able to progressively curb its own sensitization actions on the demand side. As a result, the organizations will be able to devote more resources towards training.

Training for building sector technical actors

AVN is currently extending its training offers to other professionals in the building sector: project owners, project managers, architects, building technicians, etc., in order to stimulate NV building projects by contracting bodies and their monitoring.

The Technical Expertise Division produces reference materials on both techniques and methods, and implements information and awareness actions on public and service building constructions.

AVN's construction methods inspire cement masons from Ouroubonon

Following the AVN awareness-raising campaign, launched in late January as part of the SE4ALL initiative (read our update here), about ten cement masons from Ouroubonon have expressed an interest in receiving training and learning the craft from a local AVN mason.

A team from AVN Burkina travelled to meet them. They gave them further information about the AVN training course and the various offers they can take to realize their ambitions.

Seven of them signed up for the cement mason promotion (PMT). They will have the opportunity to learn the AVN technique by building a vault for their own use. Three more have said that they are interested in the standard training course, and will learn the craft on an AVN construction site.

They all appreciated the assistance of AVN instructors, as well as the opportunity to gain employment in an expanding market. Two candidates will begin training this season while the rest will prepare for the next.

Ouroubonon was one of the first villages to host pilot NV structures when the AVN project began in Burkina Faso. However, our work to raise awareness had not had the success we had hoped. This new local workforce will no doubt stimulate AVN's activity in the area.

Les maçons-tôle d'Ouroubonon motivés par la technique VN

Suite à la campagne de sensibilisation au programme d'AVN, initiée fin janvier dans le cadre de l'initiative SE4ALL (lire la news), une dizaine de maçons-tôle d'Ouroubonon (Region Boucle du Mouhoun) ont manifesté leur intérêt à se former à la technique auprès d'un artisan maçon VN local.

Une équipe d'AVN Burkina est donc venue les rencontrer afin de les informer davantage sur le parcours de formation à la technique VN et les différentes promotions mise en place pour concrétiser au mieux leurs ambitions.

Ainsi, sept d'entre eux ont adhéré à la promotion maçon tôle (PMT), visant leur apprentissage de la technique VN dans le cadre de la construction de leur propres habitations VN, et trois sont intéressés par la formation classique (hors promotion).

Tous ont apprécié le fait d'être accompagné par les maçons formateurs et AVN, et l'avantage de pouvoir bénéficier d'un emploi sur un marché en pleine expansion. Aussi, deux candidats commenceront leur formation dès cette saison, pendant que les autres se préparent pour la prochaine.

La commune d'Ouroubonon avait été l'un des premiers villages à bénéficier des bâtiments pilotes VN au début du programme d'AVN au Burkina Faso, mais la sensibilisation n'avait pas eu le succès attendu. Cette nouvelle main d'œuvre permettra certainement de stimuler de nouveau la construction de VN dans la localité.

Mali: A Nubian Vault curriculum at the Centre de Formation Professionnelle of Tominian / CFP-Tom

Fousseny Dangnoko, Director of the Centre de Formation Professionnelle of Tominian (San region) and Thomas Granier, co-founder and CEO of AVN signed a partnership agreement in February for the development of a pilot training module in the Nubian Vault technique.

This new option for NV artisan masons, including technical and entrepreneurial training both on-site and in the Centre, is a sign of significant progress in the development of the NV sector in Mali and, in the adaptation of the broader construction sector to the social and environmental challenges of the Sahel.

Since its opening in 2014, the CFP of Tominian offers many training modules in ten professional sectors: a real asset for young people hoping to get training in the region and gain durable and suitable employment. During its inauguration, the President of Mali Ibrahim Boubacar Keita had underlined the importance for these centres "in promoting courses and qualifications leading to jobs for young local people (…) a daily concern in Mali".

The inclusion of a «Nubian Vault » option in this formal curriculum will offer :

an adapted construction solution benefiting the local population and economy;
access to jobs with a promising future for local youth without the need for prior qualifications;
the growth of agricultural economies through the increase in out-of-season job opportunities;
the accompaniment of construction professionals in the changes needed in their practice with regard to development and climate challenges;
the recognition of the importance of the trainer mason's role, essential for the endogenous development of the NV skill base;
… and will thus respond to the expectations of the Government and local populations concerning questions of rural development.

Eventually, this partnership aims to see the duplication of this curriculum by other CFPs and professional training organisations in Mali.

Mali : Un cursus « Voûte Nubienne » au Centre de Formation Professionnelle de Tominian

Courant février, Fousseny Dangnoko, Directeur du Centre de Formation Professionnelle de Tominian (région de San) et Thomas Granier, co-Fondateur et Directeur Général d'AVN, ont signé un partenariat visant le développement d'un cursus pilote de formation à la technique VN.

Ce nouveau cursus d'enseignement au métier d'artisan maçon VN, comprenant à la fois formation technique et entrepreneuriale et dispensé tant sur chantier réel qu'en centre, marque une nouvelle avancée pour le développement de la filière VN au Mali, et plus largement, pour l'adaptation du secteur du bâtiment aux enjeux sociaux et environnementaux sahéliens.

Depuis son ouverture en 2014, le CFP de Tominian propose de nombreux modules dans une dizaine de filières professionnalisantes ; un véritable atout pour les jeunes souhaitant se former dans leur région et bénéficier d'un emploi durable et décent. Lors de l'inauguration, le Président malien Ibrahim Boubacar Keita avait souligné l'importance pour ces centres « de favoriser des filières porteuses et qualifiantes permettant l'employabilité des jeunes locaux, (…) un souci quotidien au Mali ».

Aussi, l'intégration dans ce cadre formel d'un cursus « Voûte Nubienne », proposera :

une solution constructive adaptée au bénéfice des populations et des économies locales ;
l'accès à un métier d'avenir, sans besoin de qualification préliminaire, pour la jeunesse locale ;
la croissance des économies agricoles par le renforcement des offres d'emploi de contre-saison ;
l'accompagnement des professionnels de la construction dans la transformation nécessaire de leurs pratiques au regard des enjeux de développement et de climat ;
la valorisation du métier de maçon formateur, essentielle pour le développement endogène du savoir faire VN ;
… et permettra donc d'apporter des avancées concrètes quant aux attentes du Gouvernement et des populations en matière de développement rural.

A terme ce partenariat vise également la duplication de ce cursus à d'autres CFP et acteurs de formation au Mali, voir de la sous-région.

Hôtel de Département de Matam en VN : le chantier commence !

La construction de l'Hôtel de Département de Matam en VN, deuxième chantier réalisé dans le cadre du projet VN Fouta, a officiellement démarré cette semaine. Ce chantier, d'une surface totale de 561 m2 sera réalisé en 2 phases, la première de 367 m2 devant s'achever cette saison.

Après la réalisation des études architecturales produites par Al Mizan, permettant l'élaboration et le lancement du Dossier D'appel d'Offre (DAO), ce sont les entreprises Habitat Moderne [1]/Rich Man Entreprise qui ont obtenu le marché. Rappelons qu'il s'agissait du premier marché VN dont la passation rentre dans le cadre des procédures de marchés publics sénégalaises, illustrant une belle avancée pour la reconnaissance institutionnelle de la technique VN.

Le lancement symbolique des travaux a été officialisé mardi par le Président du Département de Matam, Amadou Djibril Diallo et de son équipe, en présence de l'entreprise Rich Man et de quelques acteurs techniques. Le Président n'a pas manqué de remercier tout le monde et de rappeler l'importance de réaliser ce projet en VN, pour appuyer l'exemplarité de ces constructions dans la région.

Côté chantier, la confection des briques a déjà démarrée, en attendant l'aménagement total de l'espace de chantier et le démarrage effectif des activités. 16 maçons sénégalais (dont 5 nouveaux) et 8 maçons exogènes sont impliqués sur ce projet ambitieux.

Construction of the Matam Town Hall in NV has started!

The construction site of the Matam Town Hall using the NV technique was officially opened last week. The building will have a total surface area of 561 m2 and will be realised in two stages, the first, comprising 367 m2 to be completed this season. It is the first of several NV buildings in the NV Fouta Project.

After the completion of the architectural studies by Al Mizan leading to the public tender document, the market was won by the firms Habitat Moderne [1] /Rich Man. This is the first NV contract to have been processed through the Senegalese public procurement procedure - a clear sign of the formal institutional recognition of the NV technique.

The construction site was formally opened last Tuesday by the President of the Matam Département Amadou Djibril Diallo and his team, in the presence of the Rich Man firm and several technical actors. The President thanked everyone and stressed the significance of the adoption of the NV technique as an example for other construction projects in the Region.

The fabrication of bricks has already started on the site, pending the laying out of the entire site and the start of construction. 16 Senegalese masons (including 5 new ones) and 8 NV masons from neighbouring countries will be working on this ambitious project.

Témoignages d'apprenants béninois : les modules de formation technique renforcée

Début janvier, Samuel Rodrigues, Coordinateur International du pôle expertise technique d'AVN est venu dispenser un module de formation sur postes spécifiques à neuf apprenants burkinabè et béninois à Djougou. Ce module fait partie des activités de renforcement mis en œuvre par AVN pour accélérer et améliorer la formation de l'offre sur le marché de la VN. Quatre postes techniques étaient donc concernés par ce module : la pente, la pose des gouttières, la pose de la bâche d'étanchéité et la pose des dallettes. Retour sur cette expérience enrichissante, à travers les mots des apprenants.

Comment s'est déroulée cette formation ?
Le formateur réuni le matériel et les matériaux nécessaires à la réalisation. Il explique et passe à la démonstration puis, quand il estime que les apprenants ont compris le module, il les fait passer à la réalisation, individuellement ou en groupe, pour corriger si nécessaire et évaluer la maitrise du poste.

Pensez vous que ce module a été utile dans le renforcement de vos capacités de maçons VN ?
Très utile, parce que nous voyons que la technique VN est en train de s'améliorer.
Par exemple, la pente qu'on faisait sur le toit, laissait jusque là apparaître la voûte. Mais maintenant, avec la nouvelle technique, la voûte est complètement recouverte, et ça sécurise le bâtiment. Pour la bâche aussi, nous savons que nous pouvons maintenant démarrer la pose à partir des gouttières. Nous avons aussi appris l'utilisation du niveau à eau ; matériel très simple et pratique.
A cela s'ajoutent la fabrication et la pose des dallettes en béton sur les acrotères. Ce module a été bénéfique car ce poste spécifique était peu connu, ou mal maîtrisé par beaucoup d'entre nous.

Quels sont les avantages/inconvénients de ce type de formation ?
La formation s'est déroulée à la période où la construction des chantiers a démarré. Il fallait bien expliquer aux clients l'intérêt de cette formation, pour qu'ils acceptent de libérer les équipes de leur chantier ces quelques jours, ce qui n'est pas toujours évident.
D'autre part, la formation sur ces modules de formation va réduire considérablement le nombre de sinistres au Bénin, car la plupart de ceux enregistrés sont causés par une mauvaise pente et des gouttières mal placées.

Quelles sont vos attentes pour la suite ?
Nous sommes contents d'avoir suivi ce module ; très honorés d'être bénéficiaires de cette formation, parce que nous ne sommes pas les seuls apprenants, mais le choix est porté sur nous, et nous avons acquises de nouvelles connaissances dans la voûte nubienne. Nous attendons maintenant davantage de modules sur d'autres postes spécifiques, et la poursuite de l'accompagnement d'AVN pour former les apprenants qui n'ont pas pu prendre part à ce module.

The experiences of NV trainees in Benin using the intensified training modules

In January, Samuel Rodrigues, international coordinator of technical training at AVN, came to Djougou to run a training module for nine trainees from Benin and Burkina Faso. This module forms part of the intensified training actions being implemented by AVN to accelerate and improve training of NV masons. Four technical aspects of roof construction were covered in this module: the slope of the roof, and the fitting of gutters, the plastic waterproof sheets, and the parapet slabs. The reactions of the trainees are summarised below...

How was the training carried out?
The trainer brought with him the necessary equipment and materials. He explained and then demonstrated the techniques and when he considered that we had understood, he asked each of us, individually and as a group, to execute each technique, correcting us when necessary, and evaluating our achievements.

Do you think that this module has helped improve your skills as NV masons?
It's been very useful, because it has helped us see that the NV technique is improving. For example, the slope of the roof, in the past, used to leave the vault visible. But now, with the improved technique, the vault is completely covered, which improves the solidity of the building. And we now see that the plastic sheeting can be fitted from the edge of the gutters. We also learnt how to use water levels: a very simple and practical tool. Asnd we also learnt how to make and fit the concrete slabs for the parapets. This module has proved very useful, as we had not been very familiar with these techniques, or were not sure how best to execute them.

-* What are the pros and cons of this type of training?
The training was carried out during the construction period on the sites, so we had to convince our clients of its value so that they were prepared to release the teams from the site for several days, which sometimes can prove problematic.
On the other hand, this training will considerably reduce the number of problems with NV buildings in Benin, because most of them are caused by an incorrect slope to the roof or by badly fitted gutters.

-* What are your expectations now?
We are pleased to have taken this module: honoured to have been chosen for this training from amongst other potential candidates, and we have acquired new skills in NV construction. We would like now to benefit from other modules on specific aspects of the NV technique, and also hope that AVN will be able to help other trainees who were not able to take part in this module.
