A Nubian Vault building for the Nongre Cultural Centre in Ghana

A new NV building for the Nongre Crafts and Culture Centre in Bolgatanga, northern Ghana, comprising a meeting room and a small library for the use of local children and their families, was completed in March this year. Their original timber and zinc roof building had been badly damaged in a storm several years ago.

Funds for the NV construction were raised by staff and students of the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Vienna, and the associated Young Earth Builders group. Four architecture students from the University were involved in initial discussions about the design of the building, and also documented its construction as part of their degree work.

Construction was carried out by NV artisan builder Samuel Kogo and his team in liaison with AVN's National Coordinator Emmanuel Atubiga. The Director of the Nongre centre, Adombila, and his staff are so pleased with this building, so much more robust and comfortable than their original one, that they hope to have a second NV built alongside it next season.

Un bâtiment VN pour le centre culturel Nongre au Ghana

Fin 2022, le centre culturel et d'artisanat Nongre a fait peau neuve à Bolgatanga, dans le nord du Ghana. Initialement paré d'un toi de bois et de zinc, le bâtiment d'origine avait été gravement endommagé lors d'une tempête il y a plusieurs années. Le nouveau bâtiment, réalisé en VN et terminé fin mars dernier, comprend une salle de réunion et une petite bibliothèque au bénéfice des populations locales.

Les fonds pour la construction ont été collectés par le personnel et les étudiants de la Faculté d'architecture de l'Université technique de Vienne et le groupe associé Young Earth Builders. Quatre étudiants en architecture de l'Université ont participé aux discussions initiales sur la conception du bâtiment et ont également documenté sa construction dans le cadre de leur cursus.

Ce bâtiment a été réalisé par l'artisan maçon VN Samuel Kogo et son équipe en liaison avec le Coordonnateur National Ghana Emmanuel Atubiga. Le directeur du centre et ses collaborateurs ont exprimé leur satisfaction de bénéficier d'un bâtiment robuste et confortable par rapport à celui d'origine, et ils espèrent en faire construire un second la saison prochaine.

Ghana : AVN and Bolgatanga Polytechnic University to collaborate on adapted housing

October 16th last, the Department of Construction Techniques and Civil Engineering of Bolgatanga Polytechnic and AVN-Ghana signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to define and implement a pilot dual curriculum (theory and practice) for the training of construction technicians and the wider mobilisation of the entire adapted housing sector.

The first stages of this agreement involve the creation of a collaborative framework between the Polytechnic and AVN to identify the responsibilities and working methods of each party and to promote a multi-actor network of training involving not only the students, teachers, and Trainer Masons, but also experts in social entrepreneurship and other actors of the sustainable construction sector. A relevant action and fund-raising plan has been defined.

The Bolgatanga Polytechnic University is the first institution to have entered into such a technical agreement with AVN.

Ghana : AVN et l'École Polytechnique de Bolgatanga collaborent pour l'habitat adapté

Le 16 octobre dernier, le département de Technique de construction et d'Ingénierie civile de l'École polytechnique de Bolgatanga et AVN-Ghana ont signé un accord cadre de partenariat (MoU) ayant pour objectif de définir et de mettre en œuvre un cursus pédagogique dual (technique et académique) pilote pour la formation de techniciens bâtiment et une dynamique de mobilisation élargie de l'ensemble de la filière habitat adapté.

Les premières étapes de cette entente sont de créer un cadre de collaboration entre l'établissement universitaire et AVN afin d'en dégager les initiatives et les procédures de travail de chacun, et à promouvoir un réseau d'apprentissage multi-acteur intégrant à la fois les étudiants, les enseignants et les Maçons Formateurs, mais également des experts en entrepreneuriat social et d'autres acteurs du secteur de la construction durable. Un plan d'action et de levée des fonds nécessaire à cette entreprise a été défini.

L'Université Polytechnique de Bolgatanga devient la première institution à avoir conclu un accord technique avec AVN.

The refocusing of activities towards the Garu region in 2017 illustrates AVN's desire to develop the Ghanaian NV market towards rural populations, the core target of the programme.

Partnership with the Youth Harvest Foundation

The Youth Harvest Foundation (YHF) has been working for 3 seasons with AVN Ghana to provide affordable housing for farmers and teachers, improving both the storage and storage of agricultural produce and the education of children.

“The use of local materials for construction is an opportunity for disadvantaged rural populations to be able to build and live in sustainable but affordable housing. As an organization, we were interested in the VN concept because it has a strong potential for job creation for young people.

At the start of each construction, residents often express doubts about the viability of such a building. When it is finished, on the other hand, everyone is impressed with the results.
Through collaboration with AVN, we want to provide a significant solution to the housing deficit in these sectors, by setting up an ambitious project that would include construction / training / awareness. "

Le premier bâtiment de santé en VN construit au Ghana

Après plus d'un an de préparation, le chantier de la maternité de Balungu (région de Bolgatanga) a demarré au début du mois de février. Ce projet, financé par l'ONG locale Peal Deng et validé par le Ministère régional de la santé, marque une étape importante dans le développement du programme d'AVN au Ghana. En effet, il s'agit du premier bâtiment de santé VN construit dans le pays depuis l'ouverture du programme en 2014, résultant d'une collaboration fructueuse avec une organisation de la société civile et des acteurs institutionnels.

De plus, ce chantier va permettre le renforcement des compétences de l'offre locale puisque 5 apprentis ghanéens y bénéficierons d'un programme de formation « sur chantier entier » [1] par un maçon formateur burkinabé.

L'équipe d'AVN souhaite que ce bâtiment devienne un exemple à l'échelle locale, afin d'impulser la construction d'autre bâtiments de santé et d'améliorer plus largement les conditions de soins dans le Nord du Ghana. L'ONG Peal Deng projette déjà de construire 2 maternités supplémentaires dans la région de l'Upper-East, dès la saison prochaine.

The first NV healthcare building in Ghana

After over a year of preparation, work started at the beginning of February on the construction of a maternity clinic in Balungu (Bolgatanga region). This project, financed by the local NGO Peal Deng and approved by the regional Ministry of Health, represents a major stage in the development of AVN-Ghana's programme: it is the first NV health centre to be built in the country since the start of the programme in 2014, the result of a fruitful collaboration between a civil society organisation and institutional agencies.

Moreover, the building site will help strengthen the local skills base, as five Ghanaian apprentices will benefit from complete on-site [1] training by a NV trainer mason from Burkina Faso.

The AVN team hopes that this will also serve as a local demonstration building, to promote the construction of other clinics and to generally improve health care in northern Ghana. The Peal Deng NGO is already planning the construction of two more maternity clinics in the Upper-East region for next season.

Partenariat avec la Youth Harvest Foundation

La Youth Harvest Foundation (YHF) travaille depuis 3 saisons avec AVN Ghana pour proposer des logements abordables aux agriculteurs et aux enseignants, améliorant à la fois l'entreposage et le stockage des produits agricoles et l'éducation des enfants.

« L'utilisation de matériaux locaux pour la construction est une opportunité pour les populations rurales défavorisées de pouvoir construire et vivre dans un logement durable mais abordable. En tant qu'organisation, nous avons été intéressés par le concept VN car il présente un fort potentiel de création d'emploi pour les jeunes.

Au début de chaque construction, les habitants émettent souvent des doutes sur la viabilité d'un tel bâtiment. Quand il est terminé, à l'inverse, tout le monde est impressionné par les résultats.
A travers la collaboration avec AVN, nous souhaitons apporter une solution significative au déficit de logement dans ces secteurs, par la mise en place d'un projet ambitieux qui inclurait construction / formation / sensibilisation. »

Un nouveau bureau pour AVN-Ghana

Le nouveau bureau d'AVN-Ghana a été inauguré fin octobre à Garu, en présence d'une centaine d'invités institutionnels (représentants de la Mairie, chefs de région), d'ONG et autres acteurs locaux. Plus d'un an après le démarrage des premiers projets constructifs dans cette région, la construction de ce bureau officialise le déploiement prometteur du marché de la VN dans le nord-est du Ghana.

Quelques-uns des invités notables ont été invité à témoigner lors de la cérémonie ; tous ont apporté leur soutien au programme d'AVN, à l'image de Robin Yemli, représentant de la Mairie : « La Mairie de Garu est honorée et très heureuse qu'AVN ai choisi Garu comme centre de ses activités dans la région (…) il semble évident que la solution VN est pertinente pour les populations du District (…) la Mairie ne peut que soutenir une telle initiative ».

Thomas Dietrich, Coordinateur du programme d'AVN-Ghana a rappelé lors de son discours l'importance de la dynamique de marché : « Nous aurions pu fonder une entreprise de BTP afin de vendre des maisons en VN, nous aurions également pu les donner à des bénéficiaires choisis. Cependant, nous sommes convaincus qu'aucune de ces deux solutions n'aurait permis une diffusion aussi rapide du concept. AVN croit fortement que c'est par le marché que la transformation des pratiques constructives peut émerger. »

De plus, le chantier de construction du bureau a permis la formation de 5 maçons sur des modules techniques spécifiques, comme la technique en arcade béton armé permettant la construction de bâtiment plus larges, et réalisée pour le première fois au Ghana. A travers l'acquisition de ces nouvelles compétences, les maçons ghanéens formés pourront alors répondre à une demande élargie (bâtiments urbains, finitions spécifiques, etc.)

L'équipe régionale de Garu dispose désormais d'un bureau VN opérationnel, très bien placé dans la ville, et qui, plus qu'un espace de travail otpimal, fait office de bâtiment exemplaire pour les populations locales : on ne compte plus le nombre de visiteurs par jour !

A new office for AVN-Ghana

AVN-Ghana's new office in Garu was inaugurated at the end of October, in the presence of around a hundred official guests (representatives of the District, regional chiefs, NGOs and other local actors). Over a year after the start of the first NV projects in this region, the construction of this office formalises the promising deployment of the NV market in the North-East of Ghana.

Several of the noteworthy guests were invited to speak during the ceremony: they each confirmed their support for the AVN programme; for example, Robin Yemli, representing the District, said: "The District is honoured and very happy that AVN has chosen Garu as the centre of its activities in the region (...) it is clear that the NV solution is pertinent for the populations of the District (…) the Chief Executive of the District is committed to supporting this initiative".

During his speech, Thomas Dietrich, Coordinator of the AVN-Ghana programme, stressed the importance of market dynamics: "We could have set up a construction firm to sell NV houses, or we could have given houses away to chosen beneficiaries. However, we are convinced that neither of these solutions would have promoted a rapid diffusion of the concept. AVN firmly believes that it is only through market forces that a radical change in building practices can emerge"

In addition, the construction site for the office provided an opportunity to train 5 masons on specific technical modules, such as the use of reinforced concrete posts and beams to allow for the construction of wider buildings, and this for the first time in Ghana. Through the acquisition of these new skills, the Ghanaian masons who have been trained will be able to respond to requests for larger (e.g. urban) buildings and specific renders and finishes.

The regional team in Garu now has an operational office, in a prime position in the town, which not only provides an optimal working environment, but is also proving to be a noteworthy demonstration building for the NV concept, attracting hosts of visitors!
